This is an article written by Ward Wijndelts.
Charles Dickens, who was born this day in 1812, wrote epic stories (A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist) and created many vivid characters (Scrooge). But he also was an editor for two very important journals.
These journals where important because Dickens published hundreds of articles in them, as well the serial novels Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations. The last years, a thousand volunteers digitized the journals, Household Words and All the Year Round, and made — just in time – sure that every journal is accessible online. Every scan has a text-version next to it, and al the mistakes made by OCR software, are corrected by humans. It’s a wonderful crowd sourcing project.
